The Magus Grade

A∴A∴

The Initiatory Structure of the A∴A∴

The Order consists of eleven degrees or levels, organized into three groups, the Orders of the SS, the RC and the GD respectively set forth in One Star in Sight sub figurâ CDLXXXIX. In the A∴A∴, blind is not blind guide and progress is measured by this series of degrees. The Order of A∴A∴ adheres more or less strictly to the guidelines set forth in Liber Collegii Sancti sub figura CLXXXV by Aleister Crowley.

Magus
9° = 2□

Magus. — Attains to wisdom, declares his law (See Liber I, vel Magi) and is a Master of all Magick in its greatest and highest sense.

  • The Grade of Magus is described in Liber I vel Magi, and there are accounts of its character in Liber 418 in the Higher Aethyrs.
  • There is also a full and precise description of the attainment of this Grade in the Magical Record of the Beast 666.
  • The essential characteristic of the Grade is that its possessor utters a Creative Magical Word, which transforms the planet on which he lives by the installation of new officers to preside over its initiation. This can take place only at an "Equinox of the Gods" at the end of an "Aeon"; that is, when the secret formula which expresses the Law of its action becomes outworn and useless to its further development.
  • (Thus "Suckling" is the formula of an infant: when teeth appear it marks a new "Aeon", whose "Word" is "Eating").
  • A Magus can therefore only appear as such to the world at intervals of some centuries; accounts of historical Magi, and their Words, are given in Liber Aleph.
  • This does not mean that only one man can attain this Grade in any one Aeon, so far as the Order is concerned. A man can make personal progress equivalent to that of a "Word of an Aeon"; but he will identify himself with the current word, and exert his will to establish it, lest he conflict with the work of the Magus who uttered the Word of the Aeon in which He is living.
  • The Magus is pre-eminently the Master of Magick, that is, his will is entirely free from internal diversion or external opposition; His work is to create a new Universe in accordance with His Will. He is the Master of the Law of Change (Anicca).
  • To attain the Grade of Ipsissimus he must accomplish three tasks, destroying the Three Guardians mentioned in Liber 418the 3rd Aethyr; Madness, and Falsehood, and Glamour, that is, Duality in Act, Word and Thought.

"Magus" Summary

(9°=2□): The Magus seeks to attain Wisdom, declares his law, and is a Master of all Magick in its greatest and highest sense. His will is entirely free from internal diversion or external opposition; His work is to create a new Universe in accordance with his Will. This grade corresponds to Chokmah on the Tree of Life. It also bears some resemblance to Nietzsche's "new philosopher" who creates values, although with more focus on self-transcendence according to Crowley biographer Lawrence Sutin.

THE SPEECH OF THE MAGI

93!

My son, in our Order, respect the poets, who are incarnations of the spirit of their times; but above all we venerate the Magi of A∴A∴ , which are the very spirit of the Aeons manifested in flesh. Each of them is called Logos , or Logos Aionos: that is, the Word of the Aeon or the age, because in truth they are the Word . It is their fate to prepare the quintessence of God's Will, that is to say, of man, in his Fullness and completely, radiating for the entire space of our species his One Light. And their Light is simple, and radical, and they can be called by the very Formula that they enunciate. For though the Words of the Magi are many, yet it is their Logos all one: and by its Word the Magus recreates mankind in an essential form of life, and mankind changes in its most intimate knowledge of itself. Then this change spreads little by little in its visible and purely material effects.

LAO TSE

It would be of no use to speak of those Magi whose memory no longer remains among Humanity, for they can only be known in the Vision of the Spirit, or the older ones, by the very structure of our bodies and minds. But among those who are not more recent and can be mentioned in the History books of human thought, you will find Lao-Tse, whose Word was Tao. His doctrine has been lost or misinterpreted, and survives today in its purity only in documents of Tlelem. Tao is the true nature of things, a movement, the way they manifest and unfold: a dynamic conception, not a stopped conception. Also, like all Magi, Lao-Tse taught the Way of Harmony in Will. So his Messages was the Truth, and the Path of Truth, so it was Lao-Tse Logos of his Aeon,

GAUTAMA

Whom men called Gautama, or Siddhartha, or Buddha, was the Silver Star Mage, that ancient and ancient Order from which the Spiritual Authority of the ordo templi orientis And his Word was ANATTA: for the root of his doctrine was that there is no Atma, or soul, as men misinterpret them, that is, a substance incapable of change. For every star, however pure its essence Hadit, is always moving in Space. So he, like Lao-Tse, based everything on a Movement, not on a fixed point. And his Method toward Truth was Analysis, made possible by a great concentration of the mind toward itself, and this fortified by a certain moderate Austerity of life. And he explored and classified in great detail the recesses of the mind, and put the keys of each of these fortresses in the hands of men. But of all this the quintessence is in this one ANATTA Word, for this is not only the Foundation and Result of the entire doctrine of the Buddha, but also the Method of His Work.

OF KRISHNA AND DIONNY

Krishna have innumerable names and forms, and we no longer know their true human birth. For his Formula is of the highest antiquity. But his Word spread in many lands, and nowadays we know it as INRI, as the secret IAO veiled there. And the meaning of this Word is Nature's Work Way in His Changes: that is, it is the Formula of Magic by which all things reproduce and re-create themselves. However, this extension and specialization were more the work of Dionysus: for the true Word of Krishna was AUM, indicating rather a statement of the Truth of Nature than a practical instruction in Detailed Operations of Magic. But Dionysus, by the Word INRI, established the Foundations of all Science, as we use this word today, that is,

TAHUTI

Tahuti, or Thoth confirmed the Word of Dionysus by continuing it: for it has shown how it is possible to direct through the Mind the Operations of Will. Through criterion and through the recording of the memory of their experiences the human being avoids error, or repetition of an error. But the true Word of Tahuti was AMOUN, by which he made men understand the secret spiritual nature of themselves, that is, their Unity with their True Entities; or, as it was then expressed, with God. And he has revealed to them the Path of this Attainment, and also the relationship of this way with the INRI Formula. Also, by his Mystery of Numbers, he made it easy for his Successor to declare the Nature of the entire Universe in Form and Structure, as if it were an analysis of this, making for Matter what the Buddha was designed to do for the Mind.

MOSES

The successor of Tahuti was an Egyptian whose name is lost: but the Jews called him Mosheh, or Moises, and his Fabulists made him the Head of his legendary Exodus. However, they have preserved the Word of Moses, and this is IHVH. This Word is in itself a Plan of the Structure of the Universe, and upon it was based the Holy Kabbalah, by which we acquire Knowledge of the Nature of all Things over every plane of motion, and of the Forces, Trends and Operations of them, as well as the Keys of their Portals. Nor did Moises leave any part of his incomplete work except perhaps the one executed three hundred years ago by Sir Edward Kelly, one of the present incarnations of the present Magician.

MOHAMMED

Note that speaking of these great Men I restrain myself, and I do not mention any immediate Echo of a Word in the world today: for these Magi having withdrawn into silence, it is only their unique Word that resounds indiminuida through time. Muhammad, who was as follows, is obscured and confused because he is still so close to our day; and it is too early to say what the full meaning of His ALLH Word is. But we can boldly with regard to his Doctrine as to the Oneness of God: for God is man, and therefore Muhammad said: Man is One. And his Will was to unite all men in a sensible Faith; make possible the cooperation of all human races in science. But as it stood at a time of maximum possible Corruption and Darkness, when civilizations and religions had fallen into ruin by the malice of the Black Brothers.

In spite of this, ponder this Mystery: Muhammad's True Word was LA ALLH, that is, No (there is) God, and LA LA is that Mystery of Mysteries that you will learn in the most advanced Degrees of Our Order. And the Illusion and Lie of that Truth have enslaved the souls of many men, as it is written in the Book of the Magician of A∴A∴ .

From the diary of Frater To Mega Therion:

"The degree of Magus is traditionally connected with the idea of number 2, the creative masculine energy, wisdom and the expression of a single idea in terms of duality. a man who conveys the essence of his racial characteristics to his wife to then perceive his innermost nature, being unintelligible to himself directly in the observation of the blooming of that essence in his son.The Hebrew name of the concept involving these characteristics is Chokmah, whose numerical value is 73. This fact seems arbitrary and irrelevant, but it is part of a symbolic language in which the præterhuman intelligence controls the initial communication with the adept. My adventures in America seemed like a series of stupidity for a long time. Nothing that I did produced the expected result. I began to experience disconnected episodes that I felt had somehow penetrated into a world where any kind of pattern did not exist. The mystery was revealed only when I analyzed that the events occurred in the near perfect interval of 73 days, or some multiple or submultiple. I understood that these 73 earth days were only one day of initiation.

(...) The word of a Magus is always a lie. So it is a creative word; there should be no objectivity in its pronouncement if it merely fixes a fact existing in nature. The duty of the Magus is to make his word the expression of his will, to make it true. This is the most formidable work the mind can conceive.

When the decision was made, my next task would be to turn my word into flesh. The morning of the fifth day of Chokmah was devoted to obtaining a son. I wanted to consume the love I had found. As before, I understood nothing of this; I just wanted to have a baby with Gata (note: Jeane Foster) and I did a series of Magical Operations with that goal. I did not know I was doing something physically impossible."
